Cisterns or Streams?

Broken cisterns or streams of living water?

Jeremiah 2:13

  • My people have committed two evils;
  • They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and
  • They have hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

John 7:37

Jesus stood and cried, saying,

  • If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
  • He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,
  • Out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.
  • But this spoke he of the Spirit,
  • Which they that believe on him should receive:
  • For the Holy Spirit was not yet given;
  • Because that Jesus was not yet glorified.

Jesus has been glorified.

  • The Holy Spirit has been given.
  • If you come to Him and drink, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • Out of your innermost being will flow rivers of living water.
  • That is the Holy Spirit flowing out of you.
  • If you believe on Him.

The thirst for truth can only be satisfied by the Truth.

Jesus is the way the truth and the life.

  • Do you expect life to move toward you or
  • Do you have life moving out of you to others?
  • The Spirit of God is to control you but also
  • To flow out of you to those around you.

Are you handicapped in some way?

  • We all are!
  • The greatest handicap is to want life to bless you.
  • God in you is to bless those around you.
  • God’s Spirit in you will flow out from you to others as
  • You quench your thirst in Him.

Selfishness is the greatest handicap.

Selfishness destroys homes and marriages and relationships.

  • God’s Spirit is not just for you.
  • God’s Spirit is to flow from you because
  • You are so full of the Spirit of God that the
  • Holy Spirit overflows out of your innermost being.
  • It is a way of life.
  • It is life.

Selfishness is carving broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Selflessness is surrendering to the Spirit of God so that the

Holy Spirit can flow out of you in streams of living water and

Bless your world and the people God has placed in your life.

  • It is your choice today. Will you be selfish or selfless?
  • Will you expect life to do great things for you or
  • Will you allow life to flow from you and do great things for others?

Fannie Crosby was handicapped. She was blind.

She wrote many songs.

The songs flowed out of her heart.

Her songs spoke of things she could and wanted to see.

How could she see?

Through the eye of faith she saw what she would someday see.

What is your eye of faith today?

What do you see?

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
