Ephesians 4:7-17 – Equipping the Church – Evangelists

by on June 11, 2013

Evangelism is one of the gifts that Christ placed in His Church. The task of the evangelist is straight-forward. The evangelist is to preach the gospel. In other words, the evangelist is to herald the good news that:

  • All men and women are lost in sin
  • The Son of God came to earth and lived as a perfect God-man
  • He, Jesus, died for the sins of mankind
  • He was buried and three days later He rose again and ascended to Heaven
  • He is coming again at a time God has appointed
  • If you accept and believe on Him and His atonement for you –
  • You can be saved!

That is the Gospel.

  • It is expressed in I Corinthians 15:1-4

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures

  • It is expressed in Acts 13:32

And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers

  • It is the content of the sermons in the book of Acts.

Acts 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up…

Over and over again the message was:

  • Jesus died
  • Jesus rose again
  • Jesus can save you
  • If you believe on Him

That is the Gospel.

Tasks and information about evangelists:

  • Preach the gospel

Herald the good news

  • Evangelize

Those who are unsaved

  • Primary ministry is to those who are not Christians

Teachers should have primary ministry in the Church

  • Protestant system has made preachers the primary speakers in Church

Emphasis on evangelism

  • Tendency to make all texts evangelistic

Rather than teach the doctrinal content

  • Evangelists typically traveled to make the gospel known to all persons

They were itinerant preachers

  • Contrast between evangelists and teachers

An evangelist will preach John chapter 3 as the gospel.

A teacher will teach John chapter 3 as the contrast between:

Nicodemus (a man of the flesh who cannot understand the Spirit) and

Jesus (a man of the Spirit living a Spirit-controlled life).

It is not wrong to preach the gospel but evangelists tend to make all texts evangelistic. That is why teachers are also needed and why Christ gave both gifts to the Church. Most preachers in the conservative Anabaptist groups are evangelists. They are doing a good job of preaching the gospel. Some of them are also good teachers.

One of the qualifications of a leader is ability to teach. Sometimes however, because teachers are not given as prominent a place in the Church, teaching on the Christian life is lacking and that lack is becoming more apparent as time goes on. Jesus was primarily a teacher. Teaching is essential to instruct the persons who respond to the evangelists.

Preaching is forceful and is to move the will of the person.

Teaching is thoughtful and is to instruct the mind of the person.
