Jehovah and the Canaanites

by on August 1, 2013

If you were a worshipper of Jehovah your life was difficult. You had to give your best lamb. You had to keep the feast days. You had to keep the law. You had to dress a certain way. Your whole life was governed by laws.

Your Canaanite (and other pagan) neighbor had a totally different worship system. He worshipped the gods and goddesses of nature. Worship was fertility rites. So, while you had to give everything to Jehovah, he was at the high places having a sensual time with the priestesses.

At a recent large (more than 1000 people), worship service of a previously Anabaptist group, there were girls dancing to “worship” music. Girls in immodest “dress.” What cannot we understand about this? This is exactly what destroyed Israel. Their men were distracted by the sensual worship and “committed fornication and in one day three and twenty thousand fell.”

Of course, we may see similar images out in public. That, however, is not purported to be worship. The difference is worlds apart. Female immodesty in worship is not from God.

As Jesus tells us, moral sin is in the heart. Do we really think we are stronger than the children of Israel? In Numbers 25 it took drastic action to stop the plague of moral sin with the local “worshippers.”

God never told His people to evangelize the fertility worshippers. He told them to stay away from that sinful lifestyle. He told them that the land He was giving them was a dangerous land, a land filled with sin that would destroy them if they got involved in it.

It is not different today. We think we are strong enough to stand against and witness against pagan worship. We are not told to stand against sexual sin. We are told to “flee.” We are also told to “flee idolatry.” There are good reasons for that counsel.

Our Anabaptist faith is a demanding faith. We believe that we will be judged by our deeds. Easy believism was never part of our religion. We are not working our way to Heaven but historically we believe that our lives must and do reflect our faith.

It is past time to return to that faith and stop thinking we can improve on God’s pattern of worship. He is still the same Jehovah and the modern Canaanites are the same sensual worshippers. It is your choice today – Jehovah or gods and goddesses?

Jehovah still demands your unquestioned allegiance. He is a jealous God and will not tolerate rivals.

I am Jehovah, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images.

Isaiah 42:8
