Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

by on August 4, 2013

This saying of Jesus is difficult to understand. What does it mean to be poor in spirit? It means the opposite of being haughty in spirit.

It means the opposite of being proud in spirit.

It means to not have a prideful spirit.

Jesus was blessing those who are truly humble.

Those who are willing to allow God to have His way in their lives.

Those who do not choose their own way.

Those who are easy to be entreated.

Those who are not pushing their own agenda.

They are not pushing their politics.

They are not demanding their own way.

That does not mean they will not stand for what is right.

  • They stand for the truth.
  • They are not about to be moved from what is right.
  • They are standing for God’s principles,
  • They do not defend their own agenda.

Church leaders, for example need to be examples of being poor in spirit.

A bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God;

  • not self-willed,
  • not soon angry,
  • not given to wine,
  • no striker,
  • not given to filthy lucre;
  • Titus 1:7

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

It is to the truly humble people that God will give the Kingdom.

His Kingdom.

Now and forever.
