The Severity of God

The Severity of God

God is a God of love. The Christian God is a God of love. Sometimes we have a struggle attempting to reconcile the God of the Old Testament with the God of the New Testament. The Old Testament God was a God of war. The New Testament God (Jesus) is a God of love and mercy and peace. Is this really true? Is this an accurate assessment?

Behold both the goodness and the severity of God.

The God of the Old Testament is the same God as the God of the New Testament.

Forty years for forty days!

Could that be true? God would punish His people at that rate? Isn’t that a bit extreme?

Moses, you will not enter the Promised Land!

Is that possible? Moses? The man who led God’s people? The man who spoke to God face to face? Not enter the promised land? Can that be fair?

Many will say to me Lord, Lord

I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. What? Is this the Jesus of love in the New Testament? Saying what?

Woe unto you hypocrites!

Eight times Jesus excoriated the religious leaders. Jesus? The Jesus of love and mercy and peace? Jesus!

If you are luke-warm

I will spew you out of my mouth.

God is boundless goodness and mercy and grace.

God is boundless severity and judgment and punishment.

That is God. The Christian God. The old Testament God and the New Testament God. They are the same God.

Jesus the God man is gracious and full of mercy but He is also your judge. He will judge righteously and will in no wise acquit the guilty.

He is a God of judgment and righteousness.

Today is the day of opportunity. It is the day of mercy. It will not always be so. The God who is gracious will someday be the God who is just.

Make Him your choice today.
