Being Healthy in Unhealthy Places

by on September 22, 2013

Environment plays a big part in our personal health.

How does one maintain health in an unhealthy place?

Can it be done?

Joseph stayed healthy in a very unhealthy place.

“The Lord was with Joseph”

He did not focus on the environment.

He did not allow the environment to control him.

He did not accept the conventional wisdom of a pagan society.

He did not stop believing when God seemed absent.

He did not get angry at God for being late with His answers to prayer

He did not give up when his expectations were not met.

He did not give up when others failed him.

He did not capitulate into immorality in an immoral place.

He did not allow circumstances to determine his understanding of God.

He did hold his brothers accountable for their sinful actions.

God told His people, ‘The land I give you is an unhealthy land. The inhabitants are dangerous.’

  • This world is a dangerous place.
  • This world is a sinful place.
  • We live here.
  • We are not citizens here.
  • We are visitors here.
  • We must survive our stay here if we are to go to our real home.

It is critically important that we create healthy places for our own lives and our children in this sinful place.

Churches should be the healthiest environment in the world.

Too often, however, they are not.

Christians should be the healthiest people in the world.

Too often, they are not.

What is your attitude toward the world around you?

The world system is not your friend.

It will destroy you

How can you stay healthy in this unhealthy world?

  • Maintain healthy friendships

Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals.

I Cor. 15:33

  • Maintain a Biblical perspective on this world system

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved,

What manner of persons ought ye to be

In all holy conversation and godliness

II Peter 3:11

  • Maintain purity of life and heart

Blessed are the pure in heart – they shall see God

Matthew 5:8

  • Bring health to every situation you meet

Do not let this world squeeze you into its mold.

Romans 12:1-2 (Philips)

Is it worth it to you to be healthy in life’s unhealthy places?

Are you willing to face life’s challenges in healthy ways?

Have you faced the difficulties that Joseph faced in his life?

What will you do with your life?
