Evil men and Godly counsel

by on October 10, 2013

David excelled in Saul’s army. The women sang that David’s exploits exceeded Saul’s exploits. Saul was very angry. He decreed David’s death. Jonathan interceded with his father for David thus:

Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him,

“Let not the king sin against his servant, against David,

Because he has not sinned against you, and

Because his works have been very good toward you.

“For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and

The LORD brought about a great deliverance for all Israel.

You saw it and rejoiced.

Why then will you sin against innocent blood,

To kill David without a cause?”

So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and

Saul swore, “As the LORD lives, he shall not be killed.”

Jonathan reasoned with Saul and showed him how much David had done to protect Israel. Saul heeded the logic and declared that David would live. But, evil men are men of confusion and not men of logic and truth.

And there was war again; and

David went out and fought with the Philistines, and

Struck them with a mighty blow, and they fled from him.

Now the evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul as he sat in his house with

His spear in his hand. And

David was playing music with his hand.

Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear,

But he slipped away from Saul’s presence; and he drove the spear into the wall.

So David fled and escaped that night.

Without warning, Saul again attempts to take David’s life. Evil is in control because it is of the evil spirit.

Saul also sent messengers to David’s house

To watch him and to kill him in the morning. And

Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying,

“If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.”

So Michal let David down through a window. And he went and fled and escaped.

Not content to have David flee from his spear, Saul pursued him to his own home. Saul’s daughter Michal married to David. She spares David’s life from her own father.

So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

I Samuel 19:1-13

How to deal with evil men – evil men in high position?

That was David’s dilemma – a life-threatening challenge.

  • Always do right
  • Always teach and live the truth
  • Work for the good of the community
  • Share your struggles with older, Godly men
  • Always trust the wise counsel of Godly men
  • Find trusted advisors who will steady you in times of danger
  • Realize that evil men are not to be trusted
  • Realize that evil men are out to destroy you
  • Realize that evil men have hearts that are full of fear and hurt
  • Dodge the spears
  • Flee from the danger
  • Do not throw spears back when they are thrown at you

Where are the Jonathans?

  • Where are the men who will speak up for truth?
  • Where are the men who will stand up for what is right?
  • Where are the men who will stand with David when he is threatened by Saul?
  • Where are the men who will challenge Saul?
  • Where are the men who are fearless in the face of threat?

The time:

  • The time is now.
  • The place is here.
  • God is calling men to stand for right and confront wrong.
  • God is calling men to be leaders in this generation.
  • God is calling you.

Will you respond?
