Claiming God’s Presence

by on December 2, 2013

Be careful when claiming God’s presence and providence. Just because you claim Him, does not mean that He is there. God requires, demands obedience. He will not accept lip-service that does not come from your heart.

Israel claimed privilege. They claimed preferred treatment by God. They claimed His promises but forgot His warnings. They were right but, they forgot God’s warnings. They forgot that He is just and will ‘not at all acquit the wicked.’

Behold the ’goodness and the severity of God.’ God is unbounded goodness. He is also unmitigated severity. Israel forgot that fact. The church has forgotten that fact.

God is a good God of goodness. We must teach and live that truth. But, God is also a jealous God of judgment. We must live and teach that truth also.

The prophets had the wearisome task of calling Israel to awareness of their sin and of God’s demands. They had to remind God’s people that they were only God’s people by the grace and mercy of God. They could not depend on God’s blessing when they were not willing to live righteous lives before Him.

Hence, these words of the prophet.

The heads thereof judge for reward, and

The priests thereof teach for hire, and

The prophets thereof divine for money:

Yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say,

‘Is not the LORD among us?

No evil can come upon us.’

Micah 3:11

The people were claiming God for their God. Their behaviors, however were not acceptable. They were living is sin. All the while, they claimed God for their own. “No evil can happen to us because God is with us.” Gott mit Uns! But it was not so.

What does God want from you?

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,

Or with ten thousands of rivers of oil?

Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,

The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and

What doth the LORD require of thee, but

To do justly, and

To love mercy, and

To walk humbly with thy God?

Micah 6:7-8

Today as always, Do justice, love mercy and walk with God in humility.

Do not just claim God. Walk with Him and be like Him.
