Jesus and Balance

by on January 24, 2014

But woe to you Pharisees! For

You tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and

You pass over justice and the love of God.

Luke 11:42a

Jesus’ denunciation of the Pharisees is legendary. He excoriated them for their inconsistency. In this passage He again passes woe on them. In this passage He also exhorts them and us to balance.

Scripture is replete with exhortations to balance in matters of judgment and love. Here Jesus himself emphasizes this balance. He reminds us that justice and love are of God. He reminds us that justice and love must be part of us also.

How difficult is this balance? Persons and institutions struggle for this balance. Scripture, not only mentions and exhorts but also, requires it.

That balance is not optional. It is integral. It is part and parcel to the life of the believer. In family, in school, in business, in church, and every else we need this exhortation. May God grant you that balance today as you live out your life as a child of this King. The King who not only passes judgment on our wrongs but also exhorts us to the balance of our Heavenly Father.
