Theodicy and You

by on May 1, 2014

If you are a child of God you will be chastened. God makes that very clear and plain in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.

Proverbs 3:11-13 My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor detest His correction; For whom the LORD loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights. Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding

Hebrews 12:5-11 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.

Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?
For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.

Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

God used Satan to chasten Job. He even used Job’s wife to chasten him. He used well-meaning friends and “counselors.” God used religious leaders to chasten Stephen – even to the taking of Stephen’s life. God used Satan and a thorn in the flesh to chasten Apostle Paul. He also used false brethren and false apostles to chasten Paul.

Will God chasten you? If you are a genuine believer, He certainly will. How will God chasten you? Who will God use to chasten you? That is God’s discretion. He may choose those less Spiritual than you to chasten you. That is frequently the case. He may use out-rightly wicked people to chasten you. He may use members of your own family or congregation to chasten you.

What will happen to those God uses to chasten you? Many times they are powerful people who have much influence over those around them. Many times they are unhealthy persons who struggle to maintain their own Spiritual and emotional health. They may be people who know you or people who do not know you at all. They may be ideological enemies. What ever their situation in life, God will hold them accountable for their attitudes and actions.

Jesus said that the day is coming when those who kill you will think they do God service. They will be Spiritually blind. They will be blind who lead the blind. And they will take the lives of God’s children.

Those whom God uses to chasten you will be judged. After they have been used by God to refine you and your life they will be judged. Maybe not in this life, but certainly in the next life – they will be judged according to their deeds.

Count it all joy when you encounter many temptations/tests. Those are times to accept the chastening of God. You will be tested. You may be tempted. You will be proven. You will come forth as gold

You have your treasure in an earthen vessel. The power of God resides in us. The power of God’s presence in our frail human existence prevents us from despair – even when life seems so hard.

Chastening is from your Father, God.
• It proves that you are indeed a child of God.
• It proves that you are partakers of His holiness.
• It produces the peaceable fruit of righteousness.
• It proves He loves you.
• It proves He delights in you.
• It proves that you are being made perfect/complete.
• It proves He is bringing you into glory
• It will be painful
• It will eventually bring joy to you
• Consider it joy during the pain

Children of royalty receive chastening. Children of commoners grow up on their own. Royal children must be taught and disciplined and discipled so they grow up worthy of their high standing.

God will chasten you. It will hurt. He may even allow you to die in the process. He may allow those closest to you to be taken from you. It is His plan. It is His way. It is His way to refine you and prepare you for eternity.

However, He will also hold accountable those who bring the chastening to you. “They know not what they do.” They mean it to you for evil but God means it to you (and maybe also to them) for good. They will be held accountable. They will be judged. They will be punished. That is God’s way. That is theodicy in your life – justification of the ways of God.
