The Road to Emmaus

by on May 2, 2014

After Jesus’ resurrection His followers were very dejected. Their hopes were dashed on the rocks of Jewish and Roman justice. Two of them were walking toward the village of Emmaus. As they walked they were joined by a stranger. It was Jesus. They did not recognize Him. Their eyes were kept from recognizing Jesus even though He was walking and talking with them.

Jesus engaged them in conversation about the recent events. What had happened, He asked them? So they said to Him,

The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

Jesus response seems harsh –
O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?

Jesus, then began at Moses and all the prophets and expounded in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

They implored Him to stay and share the evening meal with them.
He sat to eat with them
He took bread
He blessed the bread
He broke the bread
He gave bread to them
Their eyes were opened
They knew Him
He vanished out of their sight
They realized that is was Jesus
They immediately found the other disciples
“The LORD is risen indeed!”
They told their story
Jesus then appeared to them again
He proved Himself to them
He accepted their hospitality
He reinforced His former words and teachings
In Moses, the prophets, and Psalms
He opened their understanding
So they could understand the Scriptures teaching that-
Christ should suffer and then rise from the dead on the third day
“You are witnesses of these things”
“Preach repentance and remission of sins
In His name among all nations,
Begin at Jerusalem

What about you?
Are you talking about Jesus?
Are you walking with Jesus?
Is Jesus walking with you?
Is He talking with you?
Do you recognize Him?
Are your eyes open to His presence?
Does your heart burn within you?
Is He opening the Scripture to you?
Has He broken bread for and with you?
Have your eyes been opened to know Him?
Do you know the fellowship of His sufferings?
Do you know the power of His resurrection?
Are you a witness?
Are you preaching repentance and remission of sins in His name?

Since Jesus ascended He gave to us His Holy Spirit
His Spirit now lives in us and through us
The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to teach, comfort and guide us
We have the mind of Christ
He is with us every day

As believers we are traveling the “road to Emmaus”
Commune with Him
He will open your eyes to behold wondrous things from His law
He will appear to you in His Spirit
To empower you to live and teach His truth
