The 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 Rule

“Don’t you know the 80/20 rule, my businessman friend asked?”
80/20? – what is that? I asked?
“80% of your customers give you 20 % of your business and 20 % of your customers give you 80 % of your business. This ratio works in other areas of life also.”

Problem is, in my business, this ratio does not work. It can’t work. It cannot be allowed to work. I am in the people business. And, certainly we do not “win them all.” But, 80/20? Not a chance!

Jesus said,

What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?
And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. Matthew 18:12-14

And also,

“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!
I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:4-7

Jesus is very clear.
• Every sheep is important.
• Important enough to notice that it is missing.
• Important enough to seek until it is found.
• Important enough to carry it home, rejoicing.
• Important enough to leave the safe sheep and search for the one that is lost.
• Important enough to call friends and neighbors and rejoice.
• Important enough to be valued over those that are not lost.
• To Jesus, every sheep is important.

The message is clear. God loves you. He cares about you. If you have gone astray, God is looking for you. He will leave the “Ninety and Nine” in safety and go out searching for you. As long as you are wandering, Jesus is searching for you. He is searching and waiting and longing for you.

You may be lost and know that you are lost. You may be lost and not know that you are lost. Jesus knows. He knows and He cares. He cares enough to go looking for you. Jesus is not satisfied with the 80/20 rule. He loves and longs for each sheep.

Not 80/20 but 99 and 1. Jesus knows the one that is not safe. He knows the one that is lost. He is searching and longing to bring all the sheep into the safety of His fold. He is the good Shepherd.
