The Holy Spirit –In The Church

by on August 14, 2014

-The Holy Spirit in the Church makes the Church an absolutely supernatural culture. It is a culture based on the Scripture and directed by the Holy Spirit. It is an unexplainable culture. Social scientists should not be able to explain the supernatural culture of the Church of Jesus Christ.

-Church members enter the Church by being baptized by the Holy Spirit
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free–and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

For in fact the body is not one member but many. I Corinthians 12:12-14
Holy Spirit baptism is the experience of those who come to God through Jesus Christ. This is the real baptism. This is the baptism that makes us one in union with Christ.

-Church members have gifts given to them by the Holy Spirit. Those gifts give them a place in the Church, the body of Christ.
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
There are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
I Corinthians 12:4-7
Evangelists and shepherds and teachers and those with the gift of administration and all the other parts of the Body of Christ work together to make the Church what God wants us to be.

-Obedient Churches are devoid of politics. The Holy Spirit is particularly not political. Powerful, clever persons quiet the voice of the Spirit. Politics must, of necessity, avoid truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. Politics quiets the voice of the Spirit. Politics misleads good men like Barnabas, as Paul encountered in Galatians.
And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him (Peter), so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. Galatians 2:13
This passage illustrates how it takes drastic action by a very strong Spirit-led man (Paul) to overcome the hypocrisy of one powerful political leader (Peter).

-The Holy Spirit indwells the obedient Church.
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. I Corinthians 3:16-17
The pronouns are plural. This is the gathered group of believers, the Church, the “temple of God.” God lives in that Church.

-The Holy Spirit directs the obedient Church in decision making.
For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; Acts 15:28
It is so important that the Holy Spirit is consulted and obeyed in decisions of the Church.

-The Holy Spirit directs the obedient Church in calling leaders
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28
The Holy Spirit has gifted some men with the responsibility of overseer. That call comes from the Holy Spirit and is recognized by the faithful Church that is indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God.
Deacons were also chosen on the same basis-
Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business Acts 6:3

-The Holy Spirit makes the Church a supernatural community. It is made up of Holy Spirit led persons. These persons use their gifts just like the human body uses its members to live every day. This makes the Church the functioning body of Christ in this world today. It is led by Holy Spirit controlled persons. It is the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ directed by His Holy Spirit that He has sent to instruct and guide His Church since the day of Pentecost.

This kind of Church will change the world.
That is exactly God’s plan.
