Heartbreak – Apostle Paul – Galatians 3

by on August 31, 2014

These glimpses of heartbreak in the Scripture are often overlooked because they do not lend themselves to feel-good messages. They are here to give direction to our day just as they have in days past. The Bible is a book of truth. It tells the truth about God and man and behaviors.

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:1-3

Here again, Paul expressed incredulity at the behaviors of those he was shepherding. His words are harsh and healing at the same time. He speaks as a father to his children. He grieves at their lack of understanding and their inability to live the truth they have been taught.

Impressive false apostles led the Galatians away from the truth and into the law. Paul says the Galatians have been “bewitched!” Persuasive and zealous false teachers stole the hearts of some of Paul’s congregation in Galatia. He addressed the Galatians by appealing to the teaching he gave them. How could they leave the truth for error? He is grieving.

Most people are followers. They will follow the leaders. That is why it is so critically important that the leaders are teachers who ‘declare the whole counsel of God’ and can make the truth of Scripture come alive to the people. Leaders must be Acts 20:28 men who are called by the Holy Spirit to feed the flock of God. Jesus was such a man. Jesus was such a teacher.

Jesus in Mark 6:34 saw the “people as sheep without a shepherd and He taught them many things.” That is the need today also. Teaching that makes the Word of God come alive is the desperate need of the people in this day. To those of us who are called to teach and shepherd; let us be about our Father’s business!
God is calling and His people are waiting.
