Falsehood

by on October 9, 2014

The Bible emphasizes truth in all things. It also emphasizes the evil of what is false.

Exodus 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Your neighbor should be able to trust you. Your life should be beyond reproach in every way. You must never attempt to gain advantage by misrepresenting anyone. Make sure that your life is totally honest in every way, especially with your neighbor. That will please your God.

Exodus 23:1 You shall not raise a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

Make sure that you never misrepresent anything for good or for evil. Do not allow yourself to be drawn into schemes that join you in an unequal yoke with the wicked.

Psalm 119:104 Through Your commandments I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.

God’s Word will provide for personal holiness. Part of that is to hate what is evil and false. You must love the truth but, it is not enough to love the truth. You must also hate the false because God hates evil and falsehood.

Jer. 23:32 The LORD says, Behold, I am against those who prophesy false dreams and tell them, and cause My people to go astray by their lies and by their lightness. Yet I did not send them nor command them; therefore they shall not profit this people at all, says the LORD.

Matt. 7:15 Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Matt. 24:11 And many false prophets will rise and deceive many.

Matt 24:24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders; so much so that, if it were possible, they would deceive even the elect.

In the Old Testament and in the New Testament God warns His people to not be taken in by false prophets. The false prophets tell lies with persuasive language. They do not speak for God. They speak the words that tickle the ears of the people. They look good and sound good but are deceptive, and dangerous, and destructive. Some of them will even claim to be Christ. They are not sent by God, no matter what they say. God is against them. They will deceive all the people except those who have Spiritual discernment provided by the Holy Spirit of God.

Luke 6:26 Woe to you when all men shall speak well of you! For so their fathers did to the false prophets.

People love false prophets. The record is replete with that truth. Real prophets of God will cause division based on truth. That will cause many to hate you if you are a true prophet of the Most High God.

Matt.  26:59 And the chief priests and the elders and all the Sanhedrin sought false witness against Jesus, in order to put Him to death.

Matt. 26:60 But they found none; yea, though many false witnesses came, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came up.

Mark 14:56-59 For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.'” But not even then did their testimony agree.

Imagine – the God of all truth. The God who was and is truth being assaulted by false witnesses! Even when the witnesses were obviously false, the religious leaders accepted the false witnesses instead of insisting on truth. This situation defies all logic and represents the greatest travesty of justice.

Acts 6:13 And they set up false witnesses, who said, This man does not cease speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the Law.

As the God so the disciple. The religious leaders treated Stephen as they had treated Jesus Christ.

II Cor.  11:13 For such ones are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

II Cor. 11:26 I have been in travels often; in dangers from waters; in dangers from robbers; in dangers from my race; in dangers from the heathen; in dangers in the city; in dangers in the wilderness; in dangers on the sea; in dangers among false brothers.

II Tim. 3:3 without natural affection, unyielding, false accusers, without self-control, savage, despisers of good,

II Pet. 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who secretly will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.

Even in the church, falsehood is ever present. Apostle Paul further warns –

Acts 20:29-30 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. “Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

The truth is: God hates falsehood. He hates anything false. How careful must we be to make sure that truth is our highest value? That is what will please God. That will take constant vigilance and Godly discernment. It will take the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit to keep us true to God in heart, mind, and action. Our lives and decisions must always reflect the eternal truth of the One True God. We must love truth but we must also hate what is evil and false or we will be drawn into the alluring web of evil.
