Paul and Barnabas

by on November 1, 2014

Paul and Barnabas were first century believers. They were very different kinds of people. They were both very valuable. They were both used by God to build and bless the fledgling Church.

Paul needed Barnabas-

But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Acts 9:27

Paul was the arch-persecutor of the early Church. After Paul met the Lord, Paul needed someone to allow him into the Church. Barnabas was the trusting, faithful, merciful, believer who brought Paul to the Apostles. God used Barnabas and his innocent trusting manner to overcome the suspicions and fears of the Church. Paul needed Barnabas. God used Barnabas to welcome and bless Paul.

Barnabas needed Paul-

Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. Galatians 2:11-13

The innocent, trusting nature of Barnabas, necessary and useful as it was, allowed Barnabas to be carried away with Peter’s hypocrisy. Paul entered the scene and brought the needed, dramatic, forceful, correction to the situation. Barnabas needed Paul. God used Paul to correct and bless Barnabas.

These two men were strong believers who had needs. God provided for those needs to be met through the other man. It is not different today. Strong men need each other. God has placed gifts in the Church to equip and edify the body of Christ. Let us honor those gifts. We need them.
