Right and Wrong

Social Inversions

Healthy social structures keep truth right side up. They keep priorities correct. On the other hand, unhealthy social structures create inversions. Unhealthy religious systems create inversions. Old Testament Israel created inversions. Modern religion creates inversions. The Church of Jesus Christ does not allow moral inversions.

An inversion means that up is down and down is up.
An inversion means that right is wrong and wrong is right.
An inversion means that left is right and right is left.

The Bible has much to say about this –

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Jeremiah 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

Jeremiah 6:14 They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.

Ezekiel 13:19 And will you profane Me among My people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, killing people who should not die, and keeping people alive who should not live, by your lying to My people who listen to lies?

In an inverted system, Right becomes wrong and wrong becomes right. Norms that are not Biblical can be established by powerful or political interests or by outright sin.

“We have a law and by our law he must die” is what the Jewish people said about Jesus. Their law condemned the just and acquitted the guilty. They made the guilty innocent and innocent guilty. The guilty were made to feel innocent and innocent were made to feel guilty.

Peter in Galatians 2 allowed his prejudice to dictate his behavior. Paul, wisely and forcefully intervened so that the potential inversion could not get established as the norm.

In an extreme situation, Hitler completely turned Germany on its head and remade the rules. Scapegoating and false accusations made good people bad and bad people good. Intimidation was used to control the country. Those who opposed Hitler were marginalized, imprisoned and/or killed.

These inverted systems are so unhealthy and so powerful that good people can begin to doubt themselves. The things they were taught and learned to be true are now challenged and the resulting cognitive dissonance makes their lives very difficult. They frequently succumb to social pressure to re-evaluate and re-program their thinking. They are made to feel wrong when they are not wrong. The societal pressure rewards them as they conform to the inverted processes and confess their “wrongs.” This reinforces the power of those who alter the system and cause the inversions.

Loyalty to the expectations sets the tone and defines the accepted behaviors. A society in this situation has lost its way and will eventually falter and fail because it is not built on truth. In the process it will eliminate the good people and corrupt many others.

It is the responsibility of the Church of Jesus Christ to not allow these inversions to exist. With dramatic words, the Bible expresses the need for truth and integrity in the face of inversions:
• It shall not be so among you.
• Those who sin, rebuke before all that others may fear
• With such an one not to eat
• Not have fellowship with unrighteousness
• But rather reprove them
• The Church is the pillar and ground of the truth
• Alex the coppersmith has done me much evil. The Lord reward him…

When Church leaders allow wrong, the wrong eventually becomes “right.” The wrong eventually is taught and believed as right. Then if anyone disapproves the wrong – that person is accused of being wrong. How can this be? Inversions are a scheme of the devil. He has devices and this is one of his best.
