Truth and Results in Acts 5:27-42

A. “We ought to obey God rather than obeying men”
These words of the apostles expressed the heart of the new Church

II. Religious leaders were “cut to the heart” by those words of the apostles
Religious leaders took counsel and planned to kill the apostles

III. A wise man
A Pharisee – Gamaliel – a doctor of the law
Had a good reputation
Removed the apostles from the place of discussion
Take heed – do not move too quickly

A. His wise answer
Gave some examples of prior experiences
Let these men alone
If their teaching is from men, it will come to nothing
If their teaching is from God, you cannot overthrow it
Be careful to not fight against God

B. Result
Apostles beaten and released
Apostles rejoiced that they were worthy to suffer for Jesus the Christ.

Obey God rather than man – is a Godly principle for life
Truth will “cut to the heart” of men’s authority if their authority is not from God
It is not sin to oppose religious rules and authority that are not Biblical
You may well have to suffer if you do that
Be prepared to suffer – Jesus did
Suffer, not as an evil doer but as a servant of God
God provides some wise men in all areas of life
II Tim. 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution
