Be Ye Holy for I Am Holy

Lev. 22:17-33 – Offerings to God – Holiness laws
God is holy and we are to be holy – set apart
Obey me and be separate unto me
I am your God and you are my people
God is separate from evil – ’Hallowed be Thy name’
God is the ultimate standard by which all is judged

I. The God to whom we offer our offerings
He brought His people out of bondage
He requires our best
He gave us all that we have
He saves us from the idolatry of wrong worship
He is more important than human leaders -Mal. 1:8-14

II. Types of offerings
A. Free will, voluntary offering – Acts 5:4
1. Burnt – worship, total devotion to God, atonement for unintentional sin
To honor and glorify God – Lev. 1- whole animal burned on altar
God is worshipped through sacrifice and total devotion
Romans 12:1-2 – Holy Spirit is fire on the altar
2. Grain plus the drink – grain made into cake, juice of fruit
To express thankfulness to God for the fruit of the earth
3. Peace or wave/heave – lifted up in the ceremony
To have fellowship with God
Male or female animal acceptable
B. Required offering–
1. Sin – atonement for sin – intentional or unintentional sins
2. Trespass – atonement for unintentional sins
C. Specifics of the offerings – Only the best will be accepted,
No blemish allowed
God is very specific about His worship
8 days old – means that the new life had experienced one Sabbath
Now a viable life – not about to die

III. Potential problems
Worship and offering cannot only be formal – see Isaiah 1and 58
God did want their stuff – He wanted their willingly, obedient hearts
Malachi 1:8, 3:8-11

IV. Offerings as types of Christ the perfect offering
Hebrews 9:13-15
I Peter 1:15, 16, 19
Pilate – “I find no fault in this man” Jesus was examined and found perfect

V. Offerings of praise in the prophets
Jeremiah 33:11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endures for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD.
Hosea 14:2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.

VI. Personal offerings in the New Testament era
I Cor. 6:19 Holy Spirit separates us from the world – God dwells in us
II Cor. 3:17-18 Sanctification is a growing experience
Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
Romans 12:1-2 present your body as a living sacrifice on God’s altar

VII. Vows are personal offerings that we make today
Baptism – to God for faithfulness
Marriage – to spouse for fidelity
Ordination – To God for specific service to honor His call on our life
