Song of Solomon
Mesmerizing Love – The Song of Songs
The superlative song is the Song of Songs. The Song of Solomon is the song of all songs. It is the best song. It is the most expressive of all songs.
God is so in love with His people that He cannot help but express that love. Love is His essential nature. He is Love. Our love for each other should reflect that love.
Love changes lives. Love will change your life. When and if we understand love, life will change. We will change. Our churches will change. The real Church is already there. The real Church operates on love – the love of the real, living God.
It is only when we replace that love with the imperfect, sometimes destructive, always demanding, earthly, human love that the definition of love is lost. We cannot afford to lose it. God brings it to us from His heart to our hearts. He brings it with graphic words and actions.
The Hebrew language is an objective and concrete language. It expresses itself in detailed, specific terms. In Song of Solomon, He describes her and she describes him. Their speeches are explicit. They notice everything. Their love is described in exquisite detail. Their eyes and love are only for each other. They are completely mesmerized each with the other.
God has eyes only for His beloved. He is not enticed by any other beauty. He is not enthralled by any other possibility. He loves you. He loves me. He knows us and describes us in His book. He tells of His love for us. His love is unchanging and enduring. It is the power that will change us into His image. We love Him because He first loved us.
The New Testament continues the theme of the love of God. Love, again, is described in exquisite detail. Love is: patient, kind, not boastful, not proud, not easily provoked, does not remember wrongs, rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
“Where love is, there God is.” Genuine love is of God, and is God, and God is love. This is God’s song – His song for His beloved – you. He loves you and has your life in His heart. When you realize that you are the object of the love of God – loved by God and by the people of God – that is a life changer. Nothing can ever be the same again.
God is real, bold, tough, tenacious, love – love that confronts and brings out the best in everyone. Not smarmy infatuation. Not insincere patronization, but the real love of God that will change and redeem and save.
Jesus said that we, His people, will be known by our love – our love for Him and for each other. Not known by our dress or our diet or our doctrine, but by our love. Do you know that love? Have you received that love? That mesmerizing love of God for His child – you?
Be as mesmerized with God as He is with you. Life will change. That is His promise. To you.
